Take, for instance, a backyard beekeeper from PJ, Selangor who kept the hives for six days in Petaling Jaya, a satellite city of Kuala Lumpur, before moving them to their current location in Subang, Selangor, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur​¹​.

Like our journey in nurturing fireflies, beekeeping requires understanding, patience, and dedication. We were inspired by a part-time beekeeper in Malaysia, who together with a close friend, raises bees to pollinate a starfruit farm, and of course, to enjoy a taste of their own fresh honey​²​.

Beekeeping, in essence, is all about creating a conducive environment for the bees. It starts with selecting the right spot for your beehive. This spot should be easy to clean and shady, crucial for the prevention of ant invasion. The hive itself needs to be well-maintained, with the area around it kept clean. The presence of leaves or ants can disrupt the bees and impact honey production​²​.

Once the hive is installed, it’s not maintenance-free. Ants are a common problem and if they occupy a hive, it requires thorough cleaning. In extreme cases, the entire hive might need refurbishing. A critical part of maintenance is also ensuring that the hive is kept dry, hence the necessity of a roof. A dry hive increases the chances of attracting bees, also known as catching the swarm²​.

Creating more hives, especially in Selangor, increases the chances of catching more swarms. Building a hive is not difficult and you can make one using scrapped and used woods. However, you may face some difficulties initially. But once you’ve built your first hive, the rest will be much easier. It’s all about creating a suitable home for these wonderful creatures​²​

1. Collect your compostable waste: This primarily includes fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells. Avoid meat and dairy products as they can attract unwanted animals and cause odor problems.
2. Find a suitable container: A lidded bucket or a reusable bag can serve as your compost bin. Remember, the idea is to leave no trace, so opt for something you can carry back with you (or give to us and we’ll make good use of it).
3. Layer your compost: Start with a layer of browns (like dried leaves or paper), then add your greens (kitchen scraps). Repeat these layers until your bin is full.
4. Diversity: the more diverse the ingredients in your compost, the better is is. If you have access to chicken manure, horse / cow dung, grass clippings, leaves, food scraps, fruit peals, etc … add it all in. Just be sure to get the ratios right. Too many ‘green’ things and your compost won’t turn out right. If you have lots of fruit peels and grass clippings for example, consider adding more dried leaves to balance the ‘browns’.
5. Turn the compost: Every few days, give your compost a good mix. This helps speed up the decomposition process by providing aeration.

We have loads of Raja Brooke’s birdwing butterflies … they seem to love our organic compost piles! You’ll often see them fluttering around the compost heaps in groups of more than twenty.

Summer Summer Farm is a riot of colour, with flowers blooming in every hue imaginable. The farm’s residents have made it their mission to maintain this rainbow of flora, knowing that a variety of colours will attract a wider array of butterfly species.
